I shall now tell you a story
Of I girl whom I once knew.
I had loved her for a long time
But had never dared to tell.

When, at last, I found the courage,
It was late — too late to call.
So I wandered in the city
'Till I stood outside her door.

Once inside, I said “I'm cold”;
So she led me to her hearth and said
“Sit here until you're warm” —
For she was capable of caring.

Feeling warm, I said “I'm hungry”;
So she led me to her fridge and said
“Just eat until you're full” —
For she was was capable of giving.

Having eaten, I felt tired;
So she led me to her bed and said
“Lie down and rest a while” —
For she was capable of trusting.

Once awake, I wished to know her;
So she led me to her books and said
“Please, read, that you may learn” —
For she was capable of sharing.

Then, at last, I said “I love you”;
So she led me to her door and said
“Leave now and don't come back —
For I'm not capable of loving”.
